The Greater Grand Rapids End of Life Coalition Presents…

"Strategies in Dementia Care: Preserving abilities in middle and late stage dementia patients".

This all day conference will feature Dementia Specialist Dr. Cameron Camp and take place on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 from 8:00 am to 4:00pm at The Prince Conference Center at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI.

Registration fee: $110 by October 31; $125 after that date

The public is also welcome to attend an open forum on this topic Monday, November 17th from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at Third Reformed Church on Michigan St. NE in Grand Rapids.

Meaning –Breaking, Meaning-Making: Grief Therapy as Narrative Reconstruction
Keynote Speaker: Robert A. Neimeyer, PhD

Professor and Director of Psychotherapy in the Department of Psychology at the University of Memphis, where he also maintains an active clinical practice. Dr. Neimeyer has published 20 books, including Meaning Reconstruction and the Experience of Loss, and serves as editor of the journal Death Studies. The author of nearly 300 articles and book chapters, and a frequent workshop presenter, he is currently working to advance a more adequate theory of grieving as a meaning-making process. Neimeyer served as President of the Association for Death Education and Counseling and as Chair of the International Work Group for Death, Dying & Bereavement. In recognition of his scholarly contributions, he has been granted the Eminent Faculty Award by the University of Memphis, and was made a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.

Disease, Death and Dying: Understanding End of Life Issues from a Cultural Perspective - March 10, 2006, 8:00am to 4:00pm (GRCC Applied Technology Center Auditorium)
Understanding different perspectives, the role of family, and the meaning of rituals is essential in helping patients make treatment decisions, deal with life losses, and death and dying. This conference will provide information on hwo the caregiver can adjust healthcare to the patient's own culture. The attendee will learn ways in which peopl from different cultures may relate to disease, dying and death; skills needed in communicating with people from different cultures; and information about how various cultures cope with illness and loss. Caregiving and End of Life Issues Conference

This one-day conference exploring themes
related to caregiving and end of life will feature
keynote speaker, Ron Gries. Ron is the author of
Through Death to Life, a book that chronicles his
journey through the suffering and death of his
wife, his healing, the testing of faith, and the
sadness of loss and triumph of spirit.
Opportunities for networking, resource
information sharing, and a wide variety of
workshops designed for both professional and
family caregiver audiences will also be offered
throughout the day. The cost for this conference
is $25.00 which includes: breakout sessions and
materials, continental breakfast, lunch,
refreshments, and parking (space limited, firstcome
first serve basis). Scholarships are available
for family caregivers and senior participants.

Good Grief Day Camp & Teen Days

Ages 5-8 Aug. 2 - Aug. 5
Ages 9-12 Aug. 9 - Aug. 13
Ages 13-17 Aug. 16 - Aug. 18

This program will provide your child with a unique opportunity to meet and grow with others their own age who are also experiencing grief. They will participate in a variety of grief-related activities ranging from art projects to games, which will be fun while promoting healthy grieving. Each day will run from 10 am to 2 pm, with lunch provided, at the Hospice of Michigan office near Leonard and Fuller. Participation is free, but space
is limited. Registration is REQUIRED.

Camp Remembrance – September 10-12, 2004

Camp Remembrance is for children of all ages and parents who have experienced the death of someone loved.  Grief is a normal response to death and children grieve as acutely as adults, only differently.  Both children and adults need to be supported in order to begin to heal.  Registration begins the first of June and space is limited.  The camp takes place September 10-12, 2004 at Camp Manitou-Lin in Middleville – Friday evening through Sunday noon.  The whole family will be included.
